The question has challenged dietary science for decades – is low fat or low carb better for weight loss, and which is healthier? You don’t need to exercise to lose weight on this plan, but it will have extra benefits. In women with gestational diabetes mellitus, particularly those who are overweight and obese, vigorous-intensity exercise during pregnancy may reduce the odds of excess gestational weight gain ( 130 ). Ideally, the best time to start physical activity is prior to pregnancy to reduce gestational diabetes mellitus risk ( 131 ), but it is safe to initiate during pregnancy with very few contraindications ( 126 ). Any pregnant women using insulin should be aware of the insulin-sensitizing effects of exercise and increased risk of hypoglycemia, particularly during the first trimester ( 129 ). Cross trainers (also known as elliptical trainers) offer the same cardio benefits as treadmills but are low impact machines, i.e. your feet remain stationary which dramatically decreases stress placed on your joints. Cross trainers have adjustable resistance, sophisticated digital displays and are quiet in operation. These crustaceans pack a protein punch for very few calories. One ounce (4 large shrimp) has 30 calories, 6 grams of protein and has minimal fat. Shrimp is also a good source of vitamin D and selenium and even contains several energy-boosting B-vitamins. If you’re allergic to shellfish or just don’t care for shrimp, choose skinless, boneless chicken breast which has 46 calories, 9 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat per ounce.
