Workout articles, healthy lifestyle tips, and fitness advice. A: For most of our patients, unless there was a real need, we have delayed our regular health care screening. We want to be able to get our women back in the office if they’re in need of a pap smear, mammogram or a colonoscopy for regular health maintenance and screening. We’ve continued to see patients for things that are really not elective, like contraceptives, pain, abnormal bleeding and infections. But we certainly have seen that women have been delayed in seeking care. In the emergency room, many of them are sicker than normal because they’ve been afraid to come to the hospital. We’re seeing that across the system — people staying home with heart attacks and fractures because of the fear of COVID. Certainly, that fear is realistic, but we have the ability to safely take care of folks. We’re trying to get that word out — don’t stay home if you’re sick, let us help you. With being able to continue social distancing, we’ve changed completely what our waiting rooms look like; we’re staggering patients differently, having them wear masks, checking their temperature, asking if they’re symptomatic or if they’ve been with some who’s COVID positive. We’re doing proper bleach cleaning and making sure we have as few people who need to be in contact with us. We are complying with best practices to prevent COVID, and we’ll continue to do that to safely see patients. Studies show that people who participate in regular aerobic exercise live longer than those who don’t exercise regularly. Your heart beats approximately 60-80 times per minute at rest, 100,000 times a day, more than 30 million times per year, and about 2.5 billion times in a 70-year lifetime! Every beat of your heart sends a volume of blood (called stroke volume – more about that later), along with oxygen and many other life-sustaining nutrients, circulating through your body. The average healthy adult heart pumps about 5 liters of blood per minute.
Some people are afraid to exercise after a heart attack. But regular physical activity can help reduce your chances of having another heart attack. But there are, arguably, several good reasons for highlighting men’s health. The first is that, very clearly, men’s health and women’s health are inextricably linked. This is most obvious in the case of sexual health – if men can be prevented from developing sexually transmitted infections, or are diagnosed and treated sooner, that must be beneficial to women’s health too. At roughly 117 calories per tablespoon, coconut oil (which has a versatile high smoke point) is an ideal cooking companion so long as you don’t use it every day and rotate in other cooking oils such as heart-healthy EVOO. Group fitness is not for everyone: I love group fitness, but some people prefer their workouts to be their alone time. Children with low or unhealthy aerobic fitness are at higher risk for developing premature heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure at younger ages, and they are at increased risk for premature death from heart disease and stroke as adults. While we’re on the subject of water, why not throw a few lemon slices into the hydrating and satiating beverage? In addition to adding a pop of color and flavor to a tall glass of H2O, lemon can also help encourage weight loss. Just one of the bright citrus fruits contains an entire day’s worth of vitamin C, a nutrient that has the power to reduce levels of a stress hormone called cortisol that triggers hunger and fat storage. I’ve had my home gym for about 15 years now. Despite the fact that I can work out for free at military gyms, it’s still a fantastic deal for me, for all the reasons you list – knuckleheads dropping deadlifts and damaging bars and plates; curls in the squat rack; not having the right equipment; the convenience of hitting my gym whenever I want for as long as I want; exercising my own gross habits without being judged. OK, I’m married so that’s not actually true. I’m reminded of how much i enjoy having my own gym every time I travel and have to use a public gym. It targets the entire body in a single workout. The best part about this routine is that you don’t have to worry about skipping” a workout. If you can’t make it to the gym one day, just push your training day a day forward and continue as if nothing happened.
